Blogging
Let me start off by saying this is the first time in my life I've ever had a professor using blogs as a way to communicate, interact and entertain yourself outside of class and still get 20% extra towards your final grade. The whole experience for me was overall pretty good. First because I had the chance to express my ideas, my thoughts or concerns in regards of the activities we did in class and second, because the blog is such a great way to know other classmates a little more in depth. In my personal opinion, professor Kurpis should continue to use the blog for future classes. Not only because it keep us busy and engaged with the class, but also we have the opportunities to express our thoughts and feelings about the class in very informal way. What I mean by informal, is that we do not have to write long essay or think that we are writing something that only the professor will read. On the other hand, it makes it more fun when you are writing for other students because you tend to loose it up a little bit more and be more honest in regards of your thoughts or feelings about anything that happens in class.I wish I could have the time to read every single blog but since the class was too large, it was quite impossible to make it happen. The whole experience, and reading other students experiences, was just great!!! Two thumbs up for the blogs!!!

Yea I totally agree because the class is really large and this is a good way to get to know people in such a large setting. Also the fact that its informal people tend to be more honest and more open about how they feel on certain topics. I also do wish that i had the time to read everyone's blogs as well. I would two thumbs up too!!!

ReplyDeleteMags, I too enjoy the idea of expressing my ideas, my thoughts or concerns in regards to the class activities, it was interactive and kept us engaged and connected to the class material. Informal blogging or more so, the lack of a formal structure allowed for a wider range of creativity and expressiveness. No one likes to write long essay that only scholars can understand. If I had an extra thumb I would give it three thumbs!!!
ReplyDeleteYes I strongly agree. He is such a outstanding professor I never met before. I like him so much. He is creative and teaches the class effectively. He is also a fair professor. The blog assignment gives me a great opportunity to share my ideas.
ReplyDeleteHello Maggie!!! This is also my first class when professor gives blog and grades it! I found it very exciting and it was a useful way to express my thoughts!!! I agree with you that informal way of writing does help to talk more open with group. For myself, the blog was a really pleasant activity to express myself. If in classes I don't usually participate, so here I have chance to share my thoughts and feelings about the subject with everybody. And I agree with a comment above: I have never had such a creative and outstanding professor before. It was a pleasure to be his student! I have learned a lot:)
ReplyDeletehey maggie, i totally agree with these blogs being a great idea. It truly is unique and effective and i also agree on how you said being informal with other students allows us to be honest and say what we really feel.
ReplyDeleteI also wish that I had the time to read all the blogs written by our classmates. It is a great way of being introduced to different opinions and new ideas in a relaxed, informal manner. Everyone has different ways of communicating and for students who are more reserved and do not like talking in class the blog provided the perfect opportunity for their voice to be heard.
ReplyDeleteHaving the blog count for 20% was another great aspect of the blog assignment. I feel confident that I can still get a good grade in the class despite not doing as well as I would have liked on the exams.
Yeah, it was the first time blogging was a part of my grade for a class as well. And like you i enjoyed it, I enjoyed it alot. It's a great tool for students to express thier thoughts. I didn't think of it as a way to now fellow pupils in depth, but I see that it was know after reading this blog.
ReplyDeleteLike you I also recommend Prf. Kurpis continue to use the blog in all his classes.
It was a really cool way to interact with everyone else in the class. I agree that the informal feeling of the assignment was really good because we were able to express our feelings without being critical of what we were saying and interacting with others has been great because its hard to meet everyone in class but we can meet more people through the blogs.
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree with your assessment of the class. The blog assignments were a great way of communication outside of class and it allowed each one of us to not just base the class on our own views and opinions, but we were able to see what others thought about the assignments. This was a great assignment that should expand to other classes besides management.
ReplyDeleteI disagree Maggie... seriously you probably commented on the same 4 or 5 people. The assignment is good for those students that are not good at speaking in public. But I leads to the same people taking in class because the others who don't speak will have the opportunity to participate online - the problem with that is that not everybody is going to read their opinion.
